Departmental Overview

The Department of Bengali was established in the year 2015. The Department started with two full time teachers. It’s now functioning with three full time teachers. Many research articles of the teachers are published in refereed journals. All of the teachers are associated with creative literary activities also.

The Department of Bengali runs Undergraduate Courses in Bengali under two categories— The Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) & NEP 2020 (As per University of Kalyani). As per the syllabus of the courses, approved by the University of Kalyani, We offer both Core/Major Courses and General Elective/Minor courses and also offer Ability Enhancement Compulsory Courses (AECC) in Bengali language to all undergraduate students of the college. The students of Bengali language and literature will acquire the knowledge of Bengali grammar, history of Bengali literature and at the same time they will be familiar with the cultural history of Bengal through various texts. Teachers have been given expertise development with the Skill Enhancement Course (SEC). In the syllabus a special importance has been given on the relationship between literature and movie/theatres with Multi-Disciplinary Course.

Our departmental and central libraries have over a thousand books on Bengali language and literature. Students can easily access the books they need from the library.

In Higher Studies

Several students of our department have completed Master Degree from Jadavpur University, Alia University, University of Kalyani. Every year more than 70% students of our department get admission in various universities for higher studies. Several students of our department have cleared NET and SET examinations.

Extra-Curricular Activities of our students

  1. Organising Freshers welcome, Teachers Day, participating in Departmental Seminars, College Sports, NSS etc.
  2. Arranging students-teachers discussions on varied topics.

Our Objectives

  1. To provide quality teaching in Bengali Language and Literature with a multi- disciplinary approach in the latest methodologies.
  2. To explore new areas of research in Bengali Language, Literature and culture and guide the students likewise.
  3. To organize extension lectures, seminars, conferences, workshops, fieldworks etc.
  4. To encourage the students in creative writing and to help them in publishing their creations in different journals, wall magazines and news papers.
  5. To enhance sharing of experience and knowledge with leading scholars of the subject and participate in similar programmes organized by other agencies.
  6. To prepare students to become more confident and active participents in all aspects of their undergraduate programmes both inside and outside of the classroom.
  7. To strengthen the values of democracy, secularism and justice by linking the programmes of the departments to the needs of local students and the society at large.

Expectation from the Students

  1. Have a basic and through knowledge in Bengali Language and Literature and culture.
  2. Have skills like creative writing, presentations, communication etc.
  3. Be prepared to undertake rudimentary research for Masters course and competitive exams.

Achievements

Rakhi Ghosh (2017-2020), who is completely blind, graduated from the Department of Bengali of our college. She has recently qualified for the National Eligibility Test (NET) with the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF).

Rakhi's achievement is a testament to her hard work and determination. Despite the challenges she faced as a physically blind individual, she has excelled academically and is now pursuing Ph.D. at Vidyasagar University. The NET-JRF (National Eligibility Test-Junior Research Fellowship) is a prestigious award, and her success in securing it is a remarkable accomplishment.

Rakhi's journey serves as a motivation to others, showing that with perseverance and support, anyone can overcome obstacles and achieve their goals. Her achievement reflects positively on our department, demonstrating its commitment to inclusivity and fostering a supportive environment for students with diverse abilities.
